Auction Results: Modern & Contemporary Art Day Sale, March 7, 2025 @Phillips London

It was a solid outing for the photography lots included in the Modern & Contemporary Art Day sale at Phillips in London last week. The top lot Andreas Gursky print found a buyer within its estimate range, and was matched by an early Gilbert & George work. With an overall Buy-In rate for photography under 20%, even with no positive surprises, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography (of roughly £700K) came in at the middle of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top photography lot by High estimate was lot 126, Andreas Gursky, James Bond Island I, 2007, estimated at £180000-250000; it found a buyer at £215900, and was tied with lot 150, Gilbert & George, DUSTY CORNERS NO.4, 1975, estimated at £100000-150000, and also sold at £215900, for the top photography lot honors (images above, via Phillips).

66.67% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were no positive surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate).
