Auction Results: Photographs, April 2, 2025 @Phillips

The results from the various owner Photographs sale last week at Phillips in New York generally met expectations. The top lot Richard Avedon portfolio found a buyer just above its estimate range, and new auction records were set for works by Tyler Mitchell and Deborah Turbeville. Statistically, the overall Buy-In rate came in under 20%, and there were more than a dozen positive surprises to push up the numbers, leading to Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly $3.5M) that fell in the middle of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top lot by High estimate was lot 47, Richard Avedon, Avedon/Paris (11 prints), 1947-1957/1978, estimated at $150000-200000; it was also the top outcome of the sale at $215900 (image above via Phillips).

92.18% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were a total of 15 positive surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate) (images above via Phillips):
