Auction Results: Photographs, April 17, 2025 @Christie’s (online)

Aside from a few later prints that jumped up higher than expected, the results from the Photographs sale at Christie’s last week were largely uneventful. The top lot Alexander Rodchenko print sold in its range, and was bested by higher outcomes from works by Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams. The overall Buy-In rate came in under 24% and a number of positive surprises helped the tally a bit, leading to Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly $3.75M) that came in just above the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top lot by High estimate was lot 51, Alexander Rodchenko, Vladimir Mayakovsky, 1924, estimated at $120000-180000; it sold at $126000, but it was not the top outcome of the sale. That honor was tied between two lots, each sold at $176400 – lot 16, Alfred Stieglitz, The Hand of Man, 1902/c1910, estimated at $70000-90000, and lot 30, Ansel Adams, Portfolio Two: The National Parks and Monuments; 15 Photographs, 1950, estimated at $40000-60000 (images above, via Christie’s.)

78.11% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were a total of 14 positive surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate) (images above, via Christie’s):
