Auction Results: Magnificent Nudes: Iconic Photographs from Distinguished Private Collections (online), July 16, 2020 @Sotheby’s Paris

An overall Buy-In rate of nearly 50% dampened the results of Sotheby’s recent Magnificent Nudes online sale in Paris. While prints by Bill Brandt and André Kertész faltered in particular, the lack of enthusiasm was widespread. A few positive surprises helped matters, but the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly €320K) came in below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top lot by High estimate was lot 10, Helmut Newton, The Arielle Portfolio I-X, Montecarlo, 1982, estimated at €35000-55000; it was also the top outcome of the sale at €50000 (image above, via Sotheby’s).

96.30% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were a total of 4 surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate) (images above, via Sotheby’s):
