Auction Results: Contemporary Curated, September 30, 2021 @Sotheby’s

Aside from the top photo lot Richard Prince array of women with hats which sold over its estimate range, the higher priced photography offerings included in Sotheby’s recent Contemporary Curated sale stumbled. The next four lots down from the Prince all passed, contributing to a Buy-In rate for photography near 40%, and ultimately to Total Sale Proceeds for photography of roughly $490K, well below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top photography lot by High estimate was lot 227, Richard Prince, Untitled (four women with hats), 1980, estimated at $150000-200000; it was also the top photography outcome in the sale at $226800 (image above, via Sotheby’s.)

87.50% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were no positive surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate.)
