Auction Results: Contemporary Curated, March 1, 2024 @Sotheby’s

It was a lackluster outing for the photographs included in the Contemporary Curated sale at Sotheby’s in New York last week. The top photography lot Richard Prince girlfriend failed to sell, and there were no positive surprises to buoy the results numbers. In the end, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography (of roughly $560K) came in far below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top photography lot by High estimate was lot 66, Richard Prince, Untitled (Girlfriend), 1993, estimated at $200000-300000; it did not sell. The top photography outcome in the sale was lot 299, Cindy Sherman, Untitled #132, 1984, estimated at $70000-90000, sold at $88900 (image above, via Sotheby’s.)

90.48% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were no positive photographic surprises in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate).
