Auction Results: Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales, May 15 and 16, 2014 @Phillips

With much less top quality photography on offer in its Contemporary Art sales last week than its competitors, it’s no wonder that Phillips’ results were more lackluster. With very few positive surprises (2 in total) and an overall Buy-In rate slightly over 30%, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography just covered the low end of the pre-sale estimate range.

The top photography lot by High estimate was lot 39, John Baldessari, Green Gown (Death), 1989, estimated at $400000-600000; it was also the top photography outcome at $389000.

Only 72.00% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there were a total of 2 surprises in the sales (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate):
