Auction Results: Classic Photographs & Photobooks, December 12, 2013 @Swann

Seances and telepathy experiments delivered the unexpected last week at Swann’s end of the season photography/photobooks sale, jumping to an astonishing $93750 against a pre-sale estimate of $4000-6000. The rest of the sale was much less eventful, with an overall Buy-In rate that hovered near 30 percent and Total Sale Proceeds that missed the low end of the estimate range.

The top lot by High estimate was tied between two lots: lot 150, Ansel Adams, Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, 1960/1980, and lot 265, Adam Fuss, Untitled, 1997, both estimated at $25000-35000; the Adams did not sell and the Fuss sold for $25000. The top outcome of the sale was lot 35A, (Spiritual), Album of 27 photographs, 1920-1922, estimated at $4000-6000, sold at $93750 (image above, via Swann).

73.44% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range, and there was only 1 surprise in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate):
